What is the Feldenkrais Method?
The Feldenkrais Method is a somatic practice, meaning rather than a type of exercise or expertise handed down to you from the teacher, it is an awareness practice involving movement where each person learns from their responses to the guided investigations.
There are two aspects/options:
1. Awareness Through Movement- verbally guided group lessons that I offer online. There is no demonstration. Instead, you will be verbally invited to do common movements in non-habitual ways, usually looking to reduce effort, gain insights about how you process information, and expand easy, graceful functioning. Most of the lessons are done lying down on the floor or a bed. Some are done standing or sitting in a chair. Many are adaptable to various positions. You don’t need experience to join in at any time. You join us online from the comfort of your own home or studio. The best thing to do is to commit to a series of lessons so you begin to gain an understanding of what the lessons are about and how you respond to them. But you are also welcome to drop in and check them out as you’d like.
2. Functional Integration - these are individual hands-on movement lessons. You are fully clothed and often are lying on a table a bit lower and firmer than a massage table. There is also a fair amount of guided movement for you to do on your own so I can witness how you interpret an instruction into your own process and see where we can expand ease, grace, and enjoyment.
Somatic methods are famously difficult to explain. They are better understood by doing. In fact, one of Moshe Feldenkrais’s books is called "The Elusive Obvious.” You’ll understand that (truthful) joke once you have a few lessons under your belt.
